About the Show

David and Marc weigh out the Pros and Cons about Video Blogging and share their wisdom and what they've learnt over the past 7 months.

Pros

  1. People are more attracted to pictures of humans rather than still objects.
  2. You build up a personality in the web.
  3. video blogging is still quite rare and still holds that uniqueness factor.
  4. Your viewers can multitask while listening to your video in the background.
  5. Its is a much more relaxed way of blogging.

Cons

  1. It can be very time comsuming, from creating the video to editing to uploading.
  2. Thinking up content can be a very difficult feit especially when you a one/two man team and are trying to pump out content everyday.
  3. Projecting positivity can be tough, especially if you having a ad day.
  4. Camera, sound and video equipment is quite expensive.

Good video. But seriously guys... I know it's not an extremely sunny day in Cape Town today, but your wardrobe suggests this episode got shot in Antarctica... :)

@Bernd - Thanks mate :)

@Adii - Dude, our offices get freezing cold. Every ounce of that clothing was required for our tender bodies :P

One con I can think of is the loss of search engine traffic because if all your content is video, Google doesn't have anything to grab on to. I have also found that sites that use video are hard to link to. For instance, on my site I have a preview image of every post. Videos can be a pain to take screen shots of because lots of video players have security features in place to prevent you from hitting Print Screen so unless a still image of the video is provided by the site, it can be very tough to find an appropriate image to use on my site.

Hey guys, nice one. I hear you on the time commitment point! The uniqueness factor however, is definitely paying off on my side, as far as the SA wine industry goes. I have put out two vids on my blog and the hits to the site are going crazy (relatively!). Hope to see you at the farm again soon. Good Luck. SB

Great video guys. I think the biggest thing is attitude. You guys hit it spot on with the fact that nobody is going to be interested in what you're saying if you're depressed and down on your self. Being confident and having great energy is what attracts me to users videos

One more con: You might sound (and look) more boring than you are when you post a video. Some content better be posted as a text. Sorry to admit, I turned off some of you guys' videos, because it goes really slow. I could read it in my pace, but it is not possible with videos. But overall, you guys are doing great, me thinks. I wish I could get a nice theme and/or designers like you for my blogs too :)

@SimonBack - I watched your first episode. Very slick bru, good luck with. Maintain the effort and it will go places.

@Kyle - Welcome to From the Couch mate, its important the you always project positivity. We strongly believe that if you project negativity you will receive it. So its doubly important for video bloggers.

@Ilter - Dude, we sometimes wonder to ourselves how people sit through all of our videos. We can barely cope sometimes! Its easy to get carried away in a conversation and move off topic. We should have included that as a tip but we are very guilty of drifting.

Fitting topic guys, great points too. In the video you mentioned you enjoy watching video blogs of others, who do you follow?

@Chris - Sure here is a list, there are not any design video blogs that I know of but these are my regulars in terms of video blogs in general:

Loren Feldman (1938 Media) - www.1938media.com/

Gary Vaynerchuk - garyvaynerchuk.com/

WineLibrary TV (dont ask :P ) - tv.winelibrary.com/

I also try and watch your live screencasts

I have heard more and more designers getting keen to enter into the Video blogging world. When that happens I am not sure when I will get work in!!

When some more design vid blogs pop up we will try let everyone know via a top 100 list or something ;)

Thanks for the inspiration.
