Neil Pursey 14 Jan, 2009 19:38:15 PM
mmm... unfortunately he didn't talk about anything to do with SEO.. : (
Marc Perel 14 Jan, 2009 19:56:31 PM
@Neil - Don't worry mate, there's a second half coming which will have some SEO talk in it.
Jason Adriaan 14 Jan, 2009 20:09:30 PM

Can't wait for part two :P

I'm really happy that the interview came out as well as it did, unedited is fantastic, no careful editing or nonsense, nothing but the truth and the whole truth (well, to a degree at least).
Ye episode two will have a whole lot more SEO related stuff, we tackled a more general feel and intro to monetization in this one.
Well done FtC!!!
Go on people, DIGG IT!
Max 14 Jan, 2009 21:45:57 PM
you guys at from the couch have a niche, ive not stumbled upon a similar blog yet. great interview and great blog, i have to keep coming back haha.
did he say he had a 5 figure ad sense cheque ? , cause if he did thats crazy.
Chris M 14 Jan, 2009 21:52:46 PM
Hey Max,
Yup, it's 5 figures, finally! :)
They definitely do have a fantastic niche, it's starting to move quickly now!
André 14 Jan, 2009 22:24:53 PM
Hear that sound? That's the sound of a kick-ass show, gaining momentum :)
Props, David. Chris is an awesome interview, and you handled it like a pro. Guys less smart might have tried to hustle him in a direction, but your ignite-and-step-away approach really brought out a river of relevant info. Bravo!
Looking forward to part 2!
Chris M 14 Jan, 2009 22:30:46 PM
@Andre - Thanks for the props, it was a pretty cool interview, I think part 2 will be a lot better based on the fact that I actually go into some SEO stuff. Naturally there's just not enough time to get into really really deep technical stuff, but it's at least more targetted than the first half, this is just a teaser :)
Truth be told, before the interview started, we had literally 120secs to quickly chat and we decided on a few things like topics not to touch and so forth, we felt that going in one direction only would just not work because I can't give everything in just 30mins.
Glad you enjoyed it, your support is appreciated!
David Perel 14 Jan, 2009 22:57:41 PM
@Neil - Dont stress mate, there is more to come. Please come back tomorrow for part 2. There is lots of SEO mentioned in Part 2.
@Jason - What star sign are you?
@Chris - Dude, you aced it. Great replies and I am sure many people will get lots of value out of what you have said. Nice one mate ;)
@Max - Lol, thanks mate although I am not sure how long we will remain a niche, I am sure there are peeps who are now gearing up for there own killer version of FtC. But for the meantime we are stoked you keep having to come back for your fix :P
As for the 5 figures... yeah no lies there! I have seen it bro!!
@André - Thanks André although I really think it was down to Chris, the guy knows soooo much it is scary. A 30min interview does his knowledge no justice... it is not just SEO but the whole social media thing. He has it quite waxed.
@Quick - 100%
Chris M 14 Jan, 2009 23:13:11 PM
@David, 2 things:
1. I think people just assume that it will all be about SEO because a couple people have made a comment about there being no SEO, thank heavens we got some in part 2 hey.
2. I wouldn't worry about your niche just yet, it takes a huge amount of work, people will, but they'll get bored of doing it, it happens with normal blogs all the time and normal blogs are EASY compared to vlogs. That new digital podcast by saulk is cool, but that's the only thing which comes near this and it's not video, it's just audio. Stress not :)
David Perel 14 Jan, 2009 23:24:03 PM
@Chris - I hear what you are saying dude, we work I faces off to create daily content.
EVERYONE DON'T WORRY!! The first words that come out of Part 2 is 'SEO'!! So stay TUNED!
I suggest you fill out our form above to be notified of the release of Part 2.
Ash 14 Jan, 2009 23:38:48 PM
Just finished watching the episode and it was really amazing to see the man behind the legendary imod and also get some great insight into how he went about getting to earning five digit figures from blogging. Cant wait for tomorrows episode and still cant wrap my head around the fact that he's making 3k per month of a static star sign site. Damn. You got to respect Chris's hustle though, can see that he worked hard to reach the level he's at bow.
Chris M 14 Jan, 2009 23:43:22 PM
@Ash - Those are really fantastic comments, I don't know what to say other than thank you so much! It's true, I've really pushed myself to where I am now and I always encourage people to do the same, results take time, but it's worth it!
On a quick other note, how's your website going, did you get the Adsense thing resolved, all the ads showing?
Tomorrow is going to be a good one!
Ash 15 Jan, 2009 00:26:54 AM
I think most bloggers expect to make money from day one but theres a lot of us who are patiently working towards reaching the level of guys like you and Charl. Just wish my mom would stop nagging me about all the money I'm 'wasting' on my blog.Haha
Got the adsense running again. Ive been running them on and off for about 5 months now and made $80.25. I know I'm trying my luck but could you give me your opinion on how I've laid it out on my site. Good? Bad or Ugly?
Cheers
Chris M 15 Jan, 2009 00:34:28 AM
Absolutely, I see blogging as an investment, because the more you blog, the more links you inject into Google and the more SERP juice you get, it's a gradual process of positive nature and return.
Nice one, that's not a bad amount of cash vs the traffic on your website, well done. Yup, you're trying your luck :) You have my consultation fees my friend *smiles*
Ciao
Neil Pursey 15 Jan, 2009 12:09:53 PM
Hey guys,
I'm looking forward to the SEO in part 2..
Just a question for Chris, maybe if you haven't already filmed part 2, you can add it to one of your questions.. ; )
In his opinion how many times per month/week/day does one have to post to a blog? I find that if I post too many times I start writing rubbish.. I see he posts quite a few a day, is this the requirement to get to where he is? #2 in Afrigator
Chris M 15 Jan, 2009 12:16:25 PM
I'm glad to hear you're looking forward to part 2, it'll definitely give you something to take away.
Your question opens a rather large conversation, but the premise of the answer really stands with your audience/readers. If you're blogging about your life and so forth, it's like a personal journal and therefore you should be blogging daily. If you're blogging about something 'niche' or specific, then it's going to depend how much information is available under that subject. However, the most important thing is to keep the frequency the same between posts, so if you post once a week on a Monday, stick to that always.
Does that help?
Ash 15 Jan, 2009 19:42:41 PM
@ Chris
Thanks for the feedback(reply). Really appreciate it. Busy loading episode two now:)
And one day when Im a pro blogger I'll hire you as my SEO consultant.
Cheers
Chris M 15 Jan, 2009 20:04:39 PM
For sure Ash :)
I'm busy loading part II as well, just needed to eat some dinner.
Galen 16 Jan, 2009 17:08:19 PM
Sup peeps,
Wow this video really has had a phenomenal effect! And deservedly so. *Bravo*
It is great to be able to put a face behind the notorious Chris M :) Youre doing great things man and are an inspiration to us all. I think writing a book (like you mentioned) is a grand idea :)
Just one thought on the video: even though it is lank interesting and nice to have it unedited, it is rather long and possibly difficult for some people to stay attentive.
A simple solution would be to use two cameras one set up as you had it and another on the side (out of frame of the first) that is zoomed in on the guests face. Editing the final video to cut between a long shot and close-up shot every couple of minutes is a cinch and makes a WORLD of difference.
Just a thought& Use it, dont use it. I just rate it would make future videos (and the blog as a whole) that extra bit more special :)
Otherwise keep up the great work! Kudos to you chaps
Fond regards and Happy Friday! :D
Chris M 16 Jan, 2009 17:13:12 PM
Thanks for your super kind words Galen, it makes it all worth the while for me when someone is so polite and generous with their words!
The camera idea is pretty cool, I must admit - I like that idea. I know that David and Marc spend tons of hours on all of this, so I'm not sure how much extra work it will be, but cool idea.
Hope you learnt something you can use!
Christopher
David Perel 16 Jan, 2009 17:22:28 PM
@Galen - That is definitely one of our plans moving forward. We would like to have three cameras setup around the room when we interview people but unfortunately the budget doesnt allow us any flexibility!
We used the film our shows with a cellphone camera!!! So you can imagine how happy we were when we got a normal camera& baby steps (next upgrade is microphones& we cant wait for that day to come)
Chris M 26 May, 2009 21:10:39 PM
@ Galen - I only saw your comment now mate, don't think I received an email once you'd commented. I'd like to thank you very much for your kind words, it means the world to me!

It's a pity this thread has gone quiet, we could have struck up some really interesting discussions.
Anyone?
Ben 14 Dec, 2009 14:38:07 PM
Chris, do you drive a Ford Fiesta ST with the plate "SEO GURU"?
If so, please refrain from throwing burning cigarette butts from your car (around 5:30 pm last Friday along De Waal Drive). This is an incredibly thoughtless, selfish and ultimately dangerous act (especially on De Waal drive!), get a bottle in your car for your litter.
If it's not you, my humblest apologies.
Chris M 14 Dec, 2009 14:42:22 PM
Right, 2 points here:
Firstly, I would appreciate it if in future you would approach me directly, rather than blurting an accusation out to the world.
Secondly, I do not throw my cigarettes out my window ever since the huge fire on Table Mountain, I have even blogged about this and challenged people not to do it.
If you can provide evidance (which you can't), then I would understand, but a false accusation like this is totally uncalled for and I don't appreciate it at all, and I'm sure David and Marc don't appreciate this either.
Ben 14 Dec, 2009 15:43:47 PM
I'm afraid I can't comment on what David or Marc might or might not appreciate, since I don't know them. I presume they're from-the-couch?
As to this as a forum for me to comment, google led me here (ranked 1 for 'seo guru') and it seemed a thread you followed. I see now you have a few other means to be contacted, maybe next time.
Regarding evidence, you correctly assume I have none. Aside from the fact that until about 30 minutes ago I had never so much as heard your name, let alone stalked you enough to find out what car you drive! As to your denial, from the way you were driving I presumed you were in a major hurry, so it's understandable that you forgot after you threw your ciggie away.
I'm glad to hear that you've blogged about not throwing cigarettes from car windows, more should. It sounds like this is only since the recent fire though?
Anyway, unless someone else was driving your car (in which case you really should speak to them, they're making you look a hypocrite), man up, admit you had a relapse, and try get back on the no-throwing-ciggies-out-the-car-window wagon henceforth.
Let's try not have any more fires this summer.

I must admit! I have been learning more and more about SEO and i always visit Chris's blog to see how he does things. He has some great blog posts that generate huge interest - great work!
Chris M 22 Jun, 2010 09:43:25 AM
Thank you very much for your kind words SA Blogs, please feel free to leave comments or ask questions on my posts and I'll do my best to give you advice :)
SA Blogs 24 Jun, 2010 14:15:37 PM
No problem at all Chris. Have you ever thought of giving SEO courses? AS i see it this is lacking in the industry as well as an official accreditation.
Chris M 24 Jun, 2010 14:19:49 PM
It has crossed my mind, but the problem with SEO is that it evolves constantly, so it's incredibly hard to teach properly. Yes, the basics can be explained, proven and so forth, but the stuff that _really_ counts is incredibly hard to explain, unfortunately.
Personally, though, I honestly don't have the time :(
SA Blogs 27 Jun, 2010 20:46:44 PM
Agreed! There is not enough time in the day. Hopefully we will see someone fill this gap at some stage!

Talya Goldberg 14 Jan, 2009 18:41:04 PM
