This was great guys. There are plenty of blogs that explain how to quote clients but what you guys do is the closest thing to my system and my way of thinking. Its very simple and streamlined.

Cheers.

@Meredith - Glad you enjoyed the show.

I agree, it's a lot more streamline; especially since you spell it out to yourself as well (sometimes thins aren't so clear until you actually tell yourself what's going on, if you know what I mean).

Great video guys. I found your website yesterday by accident and read the first part which was full of information. Glad you have the detailed version up so soon as I am now getting back into web design after a break and pricing seems to be a big mystery among some of the people I have talked to. Thanks for breaking it down.

Keep up the good work.

What a great video. Thanks guys for the explanation of how you produce your quotes for your clients. We do something very similar, but I never really thought about adding descriptions. What a great idea!

Keep up the great work!

Nice going lads. Do you charge different hourly rates for different phases?

like $60 ph for design and $120 for coding?

@Ben - We charge the same for design and coding. We have considered charge separate amounts but for some reason have stuck to the basics.

Do you charge separate amounts?

ok this was awesome! Thanks so much for doing a follow up.

So, I wonder... when a client first contacts you, and gives you a brief description of what they need in a site, do you every give them an average price range? Or do you immediately start gathering more info on what they need? I ask, because i find that a lot of ppl like to hurry up and get to the pricing. Do you ever feel them out and see if you can figure out that their budget is TINY (i.e. $300 for a FULL SITE) and address that before you spend all this time on a custom quote?

@Shanna - Often people are quite reluctant to give us a budget. So what we do is state our average price range. If they come back with a 'I don't mind that' then we give them a proper quote.

On our site we have a form which asks them what their budget is, but it is not a compulsory field.

Thanks David.. just what I wanted to know. 1 more Q, than I will let you get back to work. ;)

Do you guys work on 1 project at a time or several at one time. Like let's say you delegate 8 hours for CSS on a specific project, but you are working on 3 projects so the CSS for that specific project may be spread out over 2 days.

Basically if you are working on multiple projects, do your clients understand that even though you state 8 hours for CSS, it may not be 8 hours on one specific day. I am asking in terms of the timeline. What may add up to 40 hours and could possibly be accomplished in a week might actually take 2-3 weeks b/c you are working on more than one project.

It depends on the phase of the project.

CSS can take a full day, so when we say 8 hours we dedicated the full day to it.

On the design front I split my days into two (keep the mind fresh). So I will do one project in the morning and another in the afternoon.

I know that Marc will program a full page before he even considers moving on. So that may take a day, or half a day... its in the quote description ;)
