About the Show

Today you get to become involved in a casual conversation between David and Marc.

David and Marc discuss Social Media etiquette and whether or not it is a pro or a con to be so upfront and blatant. Are people taking exploitation to far?

They also share their thoughts on how to make money offline.

And sit on a new red couch.

Note: Please excuse our potty mouths.

Really fascinating discussion guys. It's a tough one. I sympathise with Marc's (apparent) distaste for the idea of "whoring" yourself out, but you can't deny that it's been successful for a lot of people. Mind you, unless you're that kind of person - with a genuine confidence/shamelessness to be the ultimate salesperson - it's never going to be easy to do. Ultimately it's all about selling a service, but I guess you've got to sell in the way that's most appropriate to your personality, otherwise it's always going to come across as false.

Not sure on moving offline, but then I'm really at a stage where I need to develop an online base before I extend a focus. I'm barely a minnow getting started! But with stats showing things like the UK's advertising spend on the internet exceeding TV for the first time, how much further can the ratios between the online and offline services change?

Like the new couch.

interesting chat! One things I'd say off the bat is that online is real life at this point. It's all real.

When I first graduated from college my first job was working in sales and marketing for a luxury consumer products company, I did a lot of direct interaction with customers and when I started out I sucked at selling things, but as I got to know the product more and really approach it from a point of view that got the customer excited about the product, up-selling came naturally.

Automating your sells online makes up-selling a little more difficult, its one thing for a websites UI to offer up "recommended" items - but when you can get someone TALKING To you and you can relate a personal connection to them and you and the product, that's when you can sell them on more stuff.

I think where Gary V hits it is the personal interaction thing. You get someone talking and weather they know it or not, they are TELLING you what they want to to buy -- you just have to pick up on it and then offer it up to them.

Great point about personal interaction Liz. I think that's a huge issue with online selling. So we really need to work hard at making things grab the customer in some way - whether that's trying to instil our own personality on our design and writing, using video in the way that Marc and David are, or other options.

I really don't know about this topic, I suppose I really am not too fussed about promoting myself...

Although I do think that being real is important. People want to connect with people, not just a logo or a company name. Maybe this is because people don't like to trust big faceless corps since most of the worlds economy fell over because of those types.

So I think I would be "real" whatever anyway - its who I am - that's that. I'm not after an F1 car so I really don't push myself as hard as you guys do :)

Good convo. Making a personal connection (not with an illustration/character/logo) is key. Looking forward to the result we talked about today (Marc).

Cool Conversation. If you really want to learn how to know how to market offline, I would suggest that you read books by a guy that has made more millionaires than anyone on the planet: Dan Kennedy. They call him the millionaire maker and the amazing thing is you can get his materials dirt cheap from eBay or Amazon. I would suggest reading his book The Ultimate Marketing Plan and then buying his course, Magnetic Marketing. I got a copy of Magnetic Marketing for dirt cheap on eBay $25.00 US dollars - a total steal from what you can learn from that book.

He has incredible seminars too, all over the US. Last year he assembled the most amazing group of entrepreneurs together to discuss how they got to the top. Gene Simmons of KISS fame was there as one of the highlights. However, you'll not get in there cheap, seats at the two day event ran $3,000.00 USD a seat!!!

Anyway, as always your Vlog is very interesting and I enjoyed it immensely.

God Bless!
