About the Show
Today a nervous Natalie sits on the couch to share with you what she learnt at a 4 day course she attended in the past few days.
The course is held by the Media-Academy South Africa and is an intensive 4 day training course on how to become a Video Journalist.
Useful tips I learnt during the course:
- Five Shot Theory
- Angles - in an interview try keep your subject off-centre. i.e Golden Cut
- Use as many visuals as you can
- Try to keep your original sound bites
I'd like to thank Alila Hofmeyr for letting me use her story, and Dominique Vandenhoudt for the great course.
Follow Media Academy SA on Twitter and Facebook, and visit their website here.

Great post!
Nat, really liked your video piece. Alila's story was a beautiful one, I wanted to keep watching when the video ended!
The video is very fluid, I felt like I was watching a professional documentary. Great work.

Awesome work Nat, a very captivating short story. You lucky to have her on your team boys!
Curious why your video format is almost square Nat? No wide screen format?

Thanks for the great feedback everyone!
@mark - when I mde the video I did it in the wrong format. I was using final cut express for the first time and didnt know how to change it into widescreen:( also I had some difficulties during the export process!

Nice Nat! Your piece was nicely thought through and the narrative tied in well with each shot. Your subject matter was also a unique and personal story which kept me interested throughout. Well Done!

Got ya. Same excuse as my brother-in-law for not shooting our wedding movie in wide screen :(

@Nat to change to widescreen in FCE, first off what'd you shoot the video in? If you shot it in widescreen, FCE should recognize it as widescreen when put into a NTSC DV sequence (this maybe a PAL sequence for South Africa, not sure). That will automatically letterbox your video by placing the widescreen video onto a black box with the bars across the top. If it wasn't shot in widescreen, just go into the video filters and add widescreen video filter, OR in the motion tab in the canvas, crop the video 12.5 points on the top and bottom. ;) What camera and format did you shoot in? If you need more help, email me. I work with Final Cut Pro as a professional video producer, and I also vlog myself. Love to help you out!
@Marc you look so proud of Nat! :)

@Marc and @Nat that was some good information taught at that 4-day course! Incorporating that into FtC will step it up even further in the vlog-sphere. Thanks for getting on the couch and sharing them!
