@Jackie - I think it depends on the project. From the Couch and We Are not Freelancers were designed on their first attempt.
I believe it all comes down to the day, I have never been one for drawing it on paper first. Usually we design it in Fireworks and then print it to draw mods / changes. Plus we keep all the designs we dont use because they can become useful for future projects.
I think it is maybe down to personal routine / preference / habits though.

Hey David,Kudos on using Fireworks. Nice to know Im not the only one. Youre going to love Fireworks CS4. It looks really really cool. Im glad Adobe kept it going.
Heres a time lapse video of me designing a site for an imaginary mountain climber called bob - snipr.com/6srev
@Jackie; I dont always sketch it, but if I am doing the site from the ground up, I do a mindmap (as in the video) and then I know the workflow, and *usually* sketch it to some degree. More just for an idea of layout. It normally ends up close to the sketch though.

@ Ross - I usually get wireframes that are done in Axure - Sometimes I go straight onto the computer, but if Im battling then I do a couple of rough scamps to get a cool layout working first before moving onto the computer - different strokes for different folks!

You should try scamping layouts on paper first - I find that it helps me alot, instead of going straight to the computer and finding out that the layout doesnt work down the line...
