About the Show
We believe that 2009 will bring in a whole bunch of new and creative layouts. One of the most under used of these layouts comes from inspiration gained by looking at magazines.
Blog layouts have stagnated, it is time to push on and magazine inspired sites will soon be one of those ways.
Brace yourself, things are about to become awesome.

@Matt - Absoloutely, particularly font sizes. I think bigger fonts in body (not just the headers) is going to be a leading trend.

Interesting you bring this up, I've always taken my inspiration from magazines. I would go to any member of my family, borrow their magazines for several hours and then return them once I was inspired.
I definitely think this is the correct guess for web trends in 2009, no doubt about it. With the huge push for online marketing, real estate space is becoming more and more important and a simple 3 column layout is no longer cutting it :)

Interesting trend 'prediction' David. There's a dichotomy here: I agree we can gain a lot of useful inspiration from good magazine design in terms of layout - wired for example, however, our reading behaviors are somewhat different - both physically and mentally - something we've learned over time. Changing these habits will be tough.
When we find that perfect balance of bringing the two together in perfect visual and usable harmony then I think we'll find magazine zen.
[perhaps some magazines can learn from web design layouts from the likes of JSM??]
Keep up the great content.

I think we must have in mind that magazines layout vary from page to page, and that's what make the mags so nice, but we can't achieve this on a website.

@Rob - 100%, we will have to find a pretty good balance between the two before it is a major hit. But I think that it will start with portfolio designs first and then spread to major sites at a much later stage.
Portfolio.com are achieving really great results with their article layouts which is starting to scratch the surface of magazine design.
@Eduardo - I would say it is becoming more possible to execute completely different layouts on different pages. Just look at how CNN can alter their front page. It is only the start, people will start getting clever with the Content Management systems and allow multiple layout options for one page.

As you mentioned, I think that Jason Santa Maria has started an up and coming trend, by styling the page/site to the content of the page/article.
It just enables you to reinforce the point or message of the content, which ultimately is the aim of any web design, plus it's just damn cool.
@Eduardo - it certainly is possible to change the page layouts quite drastically between pages. Go check out Jason Santa Maria's site. He himself admits to not being a programmer and yet achieves it (using Expression Engine I think). It just takes a bit of planning and thought - and obviously time (you need to style each post)
As for the magazine type layouts. I think we are already wel and truly down that road.
My prediction - it's all going to be about typography and web fonts. I'm expecting big changes in the @font-face area this year (or hoping at the very least!!)

@Dave - I know that magazine layouts have already started but I still feel that this year we will see a huge jump when it comes to theme designs.
RE Font: Dude, II agree 100% with the font trend too. We were planning on making a video of that too but have put it on hold.
Thanks for your opinion!

At last some talented web designers in SA. I'm a programmer (django). and don't design, but work with designers, not ripping them, but you guy are doing an awesome job. Well Done! BTW. jQuery or Mochikit?
David Perel 08 Jan, 2009 22:08:49 PM
@Jonathan - wow, thanks for the compliments dude, haha we dont use either framework that you mention. Marc does it all himself (although this may change as we move over to PHP), we can call it MarcQuery for now :P

Thanks for that, I never really thought about this before. But I believe that this is true and this design inspiration is being seen all over the web at the moment. Now, where is that stack of old magazines I had....
Nice video and keep up the good work!
Cheers Simon

I think a few things can be learnt from magazine layouts, obviously the actual layout which i have yet to really try, and most magazines have great typography, that can be mimicked on the web such as fonts that are used, indentation, alignment, size and weight.
